The North-West product returned to AFL action last weekend in Launceston following 740 days on the sidelines for the Hawks but will not play consecutive games after succumbing to soreness.
Birchall, a four-time premiership Hawk claimed 21 disposals and took eight marks in defence as he found space to continually possess the ball unopposed.
Hawthorn general manager of football Graham Wright told the Hawks' website Bircahll was given every opportunity to prove his fitness.
"Birch pulled up sore following the game with a bit of delayed onset muscle soreness," Wright said.
"We want to be sure he is 100 per cent right before playing again, so we decided not to take the risk."
Defender Daniel Howe will take Birchall's place within the Hawthorn line-up in one of the competition's leading rivalries.
