The Mortality over Regions and Time report found Tasmania remains second only to the Northern Territory for the number of deaths, premature deaths under 75 and potentially avoidable deaths.
Statewide, premature deaths in 2017 accounted for 42.3 per cent of all deaths, 50 per cent of which were potentially avoidable.

For people living in Launceston the medium age of death in 2017 was 81, compared to 84 in Hobart, 78 in George Town and 82 in Devonport.
In Launceston, coronary heart disease accounted for 11.5 per cent of all deaths, followed by dementia and Alzheimer's disease at 10.5 per cent, cerebrovascular disease such as stroke at 6.8 per cent and lung cancer at 5.5 per cent.
