With only two weeks remaining of the season, Washington will be released from his contract early.
He will leave the club to pursue further opportunities within the sport, however he said it was a difficult decision to make.
Assistant coach Michael Johnstone will take the helm for the remaining two weeks of the season.
Washington has been the coach of the Tornadoes for the past two seasons.
The American took the club to the 2018 SEABL grand final in a stunning first year in charge.
They bounced back after just one win in their first five matches to win 14 of the next 17 before heading down to Bendigo for the championship.
But returning to Launceston in the off-season with a brand new starting five after several key departures, the Tornadoes have struggled along to a 3-14 record that includes eight losses in a row.
