George Town mayor candidates:
Councillor Chris Barraclough
My background: retired Infantry Captain having served 5 years in Northern Ireland (in the British Army), and 2 tours of duty in Afghanistan for Australia. Have 3 degrees, and have also qualified as a Lawyer in the UK prior to coming to Australia. Prior to coming to Tassie I was a General Manager for shopping centres around Australia and PNG. Now in GT, I run my shop, a Councillor and also a fireman.
I am standing for Mayor as I hold a true passion to see George Town area thrive, as we are truly one of the undiscovered gems of Australia.
For a long time, George Town area has suffered from bad decisions made from dysfunctional councillors and councils. This is starting to change. We now have an awesome team of councillors working together to improve our community, and this needs to continue.
This Council does need more transparency and accountability to its rate payers, and I am keen to do exactly that.
Councillor Greg Kieser
George Town needs a Plan B. Too long we have relied on Bell Bay and our Industrial rate payer base and watched our neighbouring Councils capitalise on Tasmania's growth in tourism.
In short we must build a diversified economy focused on tourism to make sure we generate the growth and jobs that will provide a bright future for our community and the next generation.
Help me make "Destination George Town" a reality that we can all be proud of.
I have twenty years of experience in leadership roles with companies like IBM, Amazon and Dropbox. I hold an MBA and a bachelors degree in finance and currently run my own management consultancy company that helps Start-up technology companies launch into the ANZ and APAC markets.
I am the right person for the job and believe I can help our community make the transition to a broader economic base.
Councillor Tim Harris
To the people of the Municipality of George Town this statement replaces my electoral statement which failed to go through due to a technical difficulty (probably me).
I have been your Deputy Mayor for 4 and a half years and your Acting Mayor for the last two months. I now ask you to entrust me with your number 1 vote for Mayor so I can continue to serve the community that I grew up in and care deeply about. I undertake to continue to make the practical and independent decisions that will benefit our entire municipality.
Nurturing economic growth, development of tourism and employment, and building better recreational facilities for all ages/interest groups are the issues which are foremost at this time. Focus on these issues will help us grow a more sustainable, vibrant community.
With many projects in the pipeline, I believe we are looking at a positive future for our municipality. I ask you to entrust me to lead the Council forward at this exciting time.
George Town Councillor candidates:
Trudi Cross
I am a lifelong resident of George Town and am now raising my own family here as well. I've had the privilege of working in the community for the past 9 years with young children and their families, aiming to change outcomes through giving kids the very best start. My background in community development and strategic planning will be a useful tool if I am successful in my bid for councillor.
I'm running because I believe that councils work best when they have a balanced representation of community sitting around the table. I can see the opportunity for a fresh voice at the decision making table.
A voice influenced by different community relationships and experiences that helps us collectively as a council team be truly connected to all the parts of our community. I believe that this is really important when we have the responsibility of making decisions that affect us all.
Dean Gibbons
I am a very proud and passionate resident of the George Town Municipality, when people ask me where I'm from I gladly tell them and speak nothing but praise of OUR area. We have so many positives here and I wish to be a part of a team that can enhance the position even further.
I have been a resident of George Town for the last 34 years and employed in George Town for 33 of those years. During this time I have been on many committees including Junior Soccer, Senior Cricket and Football Clubs and Golf Club. I have been a member of the George Town Fire Brigade for over 15 years. I am also the Chairperson of the Port Dalrymple School Association. I was awarded Citizen of the year for 2018.
I was previously a councillor from 2011 to 2014 serving with passion and pride and would do so again if elected. If elected I will be a strong honest approachable and hard working Councillor for the George Town Municipality.
Patricia Harrap
I am interested in beautifying George Town in Macquarie St. with tubs of coloured flowers and a new coat of paint on some of the buildings.
I think this would be uplifting for residents and tourists alike. We also need to preserve and promote the history of the town and area along our beautiful coast for future generations to know their Colonial history and roots.
My husband and I moved here 3 1/2 years ago from Queensland to enjoy a cooler climate. He retired from engineering and I was a primary school relief teacher some years ago. We brought up 4 sons in mining towns.

I speak truth and from the heart. I myself don't know to much about "what it takes to be a good councillor" however I do feel that we as a community can help drive change and create a better future for everyone. A future that does not yet exist.
Our people are our voice and with more guidance, support by being kept in the loop and up to date on current affairs we can all play an important role in the future of our town and build a better tomorrow. Vision, determination, action.

Tim Parish
I was born at the local George Town Hospital age 55. Educated at Port Dalrymple School. Worked local and after briefly living interstate ,returned and enjoy living here. True as for all Candidates giving back to our community continues to be a very important part of my life.
As a former Councillor and now able to reflect from outside the council tent I can act on what concerns many residents now. This includes a rate rise pause until services catch up particularly in out lying areas. Maintenance and improvement of basic services ,such as fixing neglected drains are just one example that concerns myself and many residents.
I also am a strong supporter of all Industries that continue to comprise George Towns Heart and soul. I enjoy and recommend local 5k " park run' Saturday mornings and try and get to cycle spin classes.
Peter Parkes
I have lived in George Town for over forty years, I met my wife Carolyn here and raised 5 children. I work locally at the George Town Community Hub for the Department of Education and have qualifications in Business Administration, Training, assessing and education. I love music, and currently play rhythm guitar with a local band called the River Leads.
Why am I standing for Council? I believe we still have important work to do to ensure we continue to build on a sustained and solid foundation for future growth. Getting the basics right means a brighter future for our region.
I'm a firm believer in putting the ratepayers first, timely and frequent communication, transparency and accountability. We must be responsive to community needs and make community consultation the first process in evidence base decision making. So let's get a fair go for fair rates in all of our municipal areas!
Bob Pooley
I have lived and worked in the George Town municipality for 35 years; being actively involved in leadership roles with many voluntary organisations including sporting clubs, Tamar Valley folk festivals and community events.
I am passionate about developing the George Town and coastal areas into a vibrant and robust world class tourist destination to encourage investment in lifestyle and business opportunities for sustainable jobs growth.
With your No1 vote I hope to be part of a team of like-minded people to bring prosperity, compassion and a healthy vision for our community as your council representative.
Nicole Scott
I have lived and raised my family in George Town for 26 plus years and I have put my hand up for the vacant Councilor position on the George Town Council, because I believe I have a common sense approach and a good history of dealing and listening to individuals.
I would like to see a more transparent and open and inclusive council that gives value for money in regards to rates and services to its community.
I also believe we as a council need to promote our community more which in turn should create population and tourism growth making the George Town municipality a place where people want to be.
Sean Tiernan
I have decided to stand for council to attract more Businesses to George Town and the surrounding area to give our young people more job opportunities.
Business simply want to go somewhere that feels relevant and Vibrant. An area where young people live, work and play.Good Data tells compelling story about your local town and area. Businesses positioning themselves as an international location and we have Bell Bay port to offer this.
Attract More Tourists to our Town and area and promote what we have here. This can be done by: Increasing your distribution by pamphlets, advertise on the radio, a website with more information on it, being more visible, unique promotions for each attraction and special price to see attractions.
Finally I believe George Town and Hillwood Have a brilliant future and we all need to work together.
Sven Wiener
Engineer by training (UTas) & have worked in SA's defence industry sector. Family has owned large property in George Town Municipality since 1972.
Running for council to bring an outsider's perspective, free from the local politics. Having doorknocked extensively throughout the munipality, I can see why many are uneasy about the massive buy-up of its real estate by cashed-up overseas investors.
At www.pulpMillVotersBlock.com, I discuss how existing residents can tackle this by putting Restrictive Covenant on their property titles. Future George Towners might be better protected that way especially if really bad Climate Change brings the hordes down here from mainland AND beyond.
Balance in future development is important. Preserving George Town Municipality's historic look-and-feel is important. Am concerned at the money focus of the current councillors team. Just how much does ex-mayor (now Chinese investment advisor) Doug Burt care about you? Power often corrupts their perspective, sadly."
