Tasmania's fairytale run in pursuit of a medal has ended in courageous fashion for the girls at the Basketball Australia national under-16 championships in Darwin.
A loss to unbeaten Victoria Metro 55-39 on Thursday at the quarter-finals stage will now have Tasmania pushing for a fifth-place finish.
The underdogs trailed the entire 40 minutes, but hung onto a 11-10 deficit with the Victorians in the first six and a half minutes before conceding nine unanswered points to quarter-time.
Tasmania's tenacity was still apparent all the way through the second term, outscored just 12-11 in an 11-point game at the break.
But Metro sealed the win in a 15-8 third quarter before the Tasmanians had a moral victory in the last to reduce the margin by two points.
Macey Crawford scored a team-high 12 points while Jasmine Ashlin's 10 points was well above her 2.4-point tournament average.
Tasmania's boys look on track to finish ninth from their 65-45 classification win over Northern Territory.
Holding onto a slender seven-point lead at the last change, Tassie produced a dominant 20-7 last quarter.
