Joseph William Freeman, 26, was sentenced in the Magistrates Court in Launceston on Tuesday after pleading guilty to a range of burglary, breaches of bail, drug and family violence offences.

He has already served 169 days in custody - the majority in lockdown in the Hobart Reception Prison - and was assaulted by an inmate when he returned to Risdon Prison last week.

Freeman will be eligible for parole in December.

He started his crime spree on November 18 last year with the burglary of a plumbing business, and targeted hardware businesses throughout December before expanding to retail outlets, grocery stores, restaurants and florists in the Launceston CBD, Invermay and South Launceston.

Heatcraft, on Wellington Street, was the largest victim of his offending, having $7000 in property stolen. About $4500 in goods was stolen from Dawkins Power Tools.

The court heard Freeman caused thousands of dollars in damage to businesses, including those he failed to breach.

He was arrested on February 7.

Freeman has received multiple suspended sentences and drug treatment orders since 2012 for dishonesty offences, which he has "persistently failed", the court was told.

Defence counsel James Oxley said Freeman's crime spree occurred at the end of "quite a long period" of not offending, but his drug problems reappeared at the end of 2018.

He said Freeman's time in custody had been difficult with limited time outside his cell.

Magistrate Simon Brown said Freeman's offending was clearly drug-related.

"Drug addiction is a base problem here," he said.

"This offending represents a continuation of a pattern of attempts to rehabilitate, then lapses back into drug use and offending.

"I accept you had made some advances prior to this group of offences."

A compensation order was granted in relation to all businesses affected.
