Speaking alongside residents at an event launching the Hands Off Our Gorge campaign on Wednesday, president Anna Povey said the community needed to see more images of how the $20 million project could impact the space.

Dubbed the Launceston Skyway, the proposal was announced by owners of the existing chairlift - the Larter family - last Thursday and would feature 24 glass gondolas running on a triangular cableway route from a base above First Basin.

A development application is yet to be lodged, though plans are available on the skyway's website.

Ms Povey commended the proponents for having "done their best" to hide most of the 11 towers in vegetation but said there was "a lot more to be seen".

"There are some really critical views that we need details [of] and we need some representative pictures that people can get their heads around for the community to be truly informed," she said.

The group will host a public meeting on the First Basin lawn from 11am Sunday.

The proponents were contacted for comment.

City of Launceston council general manager Michael Stretton said the skyway was still only a proposal and would need to demonstrate compliance with Planning Scheme provisions, including matters such as visual impacts, should a development application proceed.

"We understand the proponents will be considering community feedback which may or may not result in changes to their plans," Mr Stretton said.
