Tasmania's Inland Fisheries Service released the trout Friday as part of their annual stocking program ahead of the August 3 trout season opening and the upcoming World Fly Fishing Championships in December.

Primary Industries and Water Minister Guy Barnett said in addition to the state's world-renowned wild brown trout fishery, the IFS "put thousands of adult fish into popular waters across the state ensuring anglers don't go home empty handed".

More than 25,000 licensed anglers take to the state's facilities each year, with the World Championships expected to attract a further 800 competitors from about 30 countries.

Glenn Eggleton, international organiser for the world championships, has previously said they were a great opportunity to showcase Tasmania as a wild trout fishery - as many others around the world are not.

The state last held the championships in 1988.

On Friday, Mr Barnett said the government had also announced a three year trial from 2020 to extend the fishing season of the lower reaches of selected rivers into May, to further support angling participation and tourism.

A $300,000 project to upgrade and build new amenities and toilets at 10 fly fishing locations across the state is expected to be completed by the beginning of the season in August.

Four Springs Lake and Penstock Lagoon will benefit from the planned works, as will Bradys Lake, Bronte Lagoon, Lake Augusta, Lake Sorell, Woods Lake, Little Pine Lagoon and Tungatinah Lagoon.

"Improved access for anglers and better facilities will encourage greater community participation and increased angling tourism, which in turn supports the regional businesses and communities that rely on this industry," Mr Barnett said.
