A proposed new multi-million dollar tourism attraction will mean more visitors than ever can experience the natural beauty of the Cataract Gorge, the project's proponents say.

Announced on Thursday, a $20 million Launceston Skyway project would see a cableway built in the Gorge for 24 accessible glass gondolas.
Not everyone agrees it is the right development for the Gorge.

Exploiting a natural beauty
It seems to me that it is getting harder and harder to find reasonably accessible places of natural beauty that have not been exploited by private companies for their own profit. By all means build creative, exciting structures in the urban environment but humans go to places, like the Gorge for example, to see the natural environment and get their spiritual fix, not to look at more built environment.

Enhancing the experience
When I am enjoying the easily accessible beauty of the Gorge I have often pondered on how my experience would be enhanced by having thousands of lazy tourists in big glass bubbles gawking at me from the sky.

Better than Mt Wellington
Perfect, much better than the monstrosity they want on Mt Wellington. Something this size would be much better and less obtrusive.

Where's the value in this
Regardless of where the funds are coming from (I'm not suggesting for one moment that where the money comes from isn't important, however) can we please take some time to actually respect the Gorge and everything that it has to give and has given for at least 40,000 years. The boulders/rocks that look over and surround the Gorge are over 200 million years old ... why would we want to ruin and disturb that? The Gorge is such a significant place for all of us who visit it regularly, tourists and people who have been on this land in the past. I don't see any value in this. It's just another money making idea that defaces the true natural value and beauty of the Gorge. It's beautiful, natural, special and amazing just as it is. Tourists will still visit the Gorge regardless.

Definitely the right time
It's a fantastic idea, my full support. Wandering through the city shopping centre yesterday we were shocked to see so many closed businesses. We need all the encouragement we can get ... bring in more tourists to spend money. The upgrade to the Gorge is a necessity and definitely time.

Negative impacts
The Gorge is an amazing and unique public space so it's extremely disappointing when commercial developments are proposed that strongly suggest radically - and negatively - impacting on the very aspects of why the Gorge is so special to locals and tourists alike. According to so many tourism polls the reason the Gorge is right up there on visitor bucket lists is due to the unspoiled natural beauty of the place, so it would be counter-productive to change this.

Leave the Gorge alone
Imagine those beautiful hills with enormous towers on them, and 24 gondolas constantly cruising overhead as you try to relax and enjoy the Gorge. This is an intrusive proposal and we don't want it. Leave the Gorge alone.

Forward thinking
Well there you go then. It should be as simple as this. Forward thinking councillors that think sensibly and realise that it doesn't only benefit the disabled, elderly and locals but also our tourism industry helping to put much needed money back into the state. Hope it happens, good chance it will I feel.

Minimal impact
What a fantastic idea - my family has deep connections to the Cataract Gorge, my ancestors planted the tree at the entrance for the birth of their triplets. It's minimal impact on such a beautiful place. I definitely support this.

Sillier by the day
So the old chair lift remains and $20 million is to be spent on an aerial slow motion merry go round? Things are getting sillier by the day in this state.

All for development
Yes. Develop, develop, develop. Can't wait to see this in action. Good work Larter family. It's just a beautiful upgrade to the existing chair lift.

Following trends in Europe
Just been to Barcelona and they have two different kinds, Port Cable Car built in 1929 and Montjuic Cable Car giving access to the Mountain. It does not impact one bit on the beauty of Barcelona which is a magical city. Nearly every country I have visited in Europe has them plus many many more countries.

Let's protect, not exploit
The great thing about the gorge and the surrounding reserve is the fact that there is not a lot of these kind of developments. It is a relatively natural space. That is its draw and charm. Lets protect that not exploit it. Sure there are the obvious changes that were made with exotic plants, lawn, pool and current chairlift. But something so natural this close to a city should be something that is protected not exploited by a few. What an ugly idea for a beautiful spot.

A good thing for tourism
Here we go again, most people haven't seen Gondolas and just assume the result. Japan has some beautiful ones, New Zealand also have great ones they don't detract from areas at all. Would be wonderful for tourism.
