Run through Tasracing, GAP Tasmania is a not-for-profit organisation aiming to find permanent homes for greyhounds when they retire from racing.
Tasracing is seeking expressions of interest to consider whether an opportunity exists for the purchase of an existing kennel facility that would be suitable for GAP.
The dedicated facility would be owned and operated by Tasracing and would have full public access, allowing GAP to better demonstrate to the community that greyhounds are "perfectly suited" to being pets.
To date, 96 greyhounds have been adopted through GAP in the 2018/2019 financial year.
During the 2017/2018, GAP rehomed 102 greyhounds into the Tasmanian community, with 85 rehomed in 2016.
Tasracing's goal is to reach a rehoming target of 150 greyhounds through GAP annually.
RELATED STORIES:
Greyhounds are increasingly becoming more popular due to their kind and gentle natures.
In December, muzzle laws for greyhounds were changed.
This allows GAP, Brightside Farm Sanctuary, and the Office of Racing Integrity to approve greyhounds to go unmuzzled in public.
Previously, greyhounds had to wear a muzzle and be on a leash of no more than two metres in length when out in public.
At the City of Launceston council meeting on Thursday, councillor Andrea Dawkins put forward a motion to lobby the state government to amend the Dog Control Act to allow greyhounds to be off-lead in designated areas. It also asked LGAT to support the motion.
The motion passed unanimously, with Cr Dawkins' forward-thinking commended by fellow councillors.
Expressions of interest for the kennel facility can be lodged electronically to eoi-kennels@tasracing.com.au until 5pm on July 12. For copies of the documentation, contact Lian Swan on l.swan@tasracing.com.au.
