The trial started on May 1 and is now in its seventh week.
The jury has heard from more than 60 witnesses, seen more than 100 items of evidence and looked at thousands of forensic crime scene photographs.
The jury of four men and eight women retired at 11.05am on Thursday and is expected to deliver a verdict before the end of the week.
Before retiring, Justice Helen Wood told the jury the assessment of the evidence is for the jury, and the jury alone.
"You are the judges of the facts," Justice Wood said.
"It is for you to decide whether there remains a reasonable explanation consistent with innocence."
It is for the jury to decide whether Mr Gale is guilty of murder, or alternatively of manslaughter, Justice Wood said.
She said all 12 members of the jury must agree unanimously on a guilty verdict of murder or manslaughter.
