But while the victors were celebrating their place in the FFA Cup Round of 32 in the changerooms, a clearly unhappy Strikers coach Rick Coghlan made his thoughts on referee Stratos Plomaritis known in the post-match interview.

Coghlan's displeasure stemmed mainly from the non-decision on forward Miles Barnard in the 92nd minute as his team tried to find an equaliser.

A long ball from goalkeeper Nathan Pitchford sailed into the penalty box and saw Barnard rise high for a header, only to be taken out by oncoming South Hobart goalkeeper Graham Wright.

No action was taken by the referee, with South Hobart sealing the game three minutes later through Isky Van Doorne.

"It's just a stonewall penalty I think the referee bottled it and it was a disgrace of a decision," Coghlan said.

"I'm happy to cop whatever repercussions or fine that comes my way.

"I think the referee was massively incompetent on the night."

The finish of the game marred what was otherwise a thrilling contest between the two rivals.

With the game already delayed by 45 minutes thanks to extra time and a penalty shootout in an earlier final, it appeared highly likely the two sides were set for a long night with scores locked at 0-0 for the first 89 minutes.

But South Hobart finally found a way past Pitchford in the 90th minute through Tobias Herweynen.

A Van Doorne cross from the right sailed across the face of goal and onto the boot of Herweynen, who sweetly volleyed the ball into the roof of the net.

Devonport piled on the pressure in the three minutes of added time, and after Barnard's incident which stopped play for a short period, they had a corner which Pitchford came up for.

However Max Fitzgerald's cross resulted in nothing, with South Hobart's clearance finding the feet of the pacy Van Doorne who raced up the wing and curled a second goal home as Pitchford tried in vain to get back.

South Hobart could have easily put the game to bed in the first half but they were continually denied by either Pitchford or resolute goal line defence by the Strikers.

Devonport showed far more promise in the second half and had a Max Fitzgerald goal disallowed in the 76th minute due to a foul.

Ignacio Giampaoli then spurned a golden opportunity in the 87th minute when his close-range shot somehow hit the post.

The Strikers' night ended on a sour note when Daniel Syson was sent off for kicking South Hobart's Hugh Ludford.

In the other two games played on the day, Hobart Zebras won the Women's Statewide Cup final 3-1 against Kingborough, while Beachside took out the Under 20 Statewide Cup with a 3-1 penalty shootout win over Olympia.
