Fighting crime will soon be enhanced with aerial support as a pool of police officers complete their Civil Aviation Safety Authority training to operate newly purchased drones.

In 2018, the state government announced $100,000 per year from 2018-19 would be granted to buy the drones and train police officers in a bid to crackdown on anti-social driving behaviour such as hooning.

The first installment of the funding has been used by Tasmania Police to buy 16 Remotely Piloted Aircraft and fund the training and licencing of 16 police officers to fly the aircraft.
The Police Department requires police officers hold a remotely piloted aircraft operators certificate from the civil aviation authority to fly the drones.
The final stages of assessment is underway, with the licences expected to be issued in coming weeks.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Ian Whish-Wilson said the drones would be located in all districts and cover areas such as road and public order services, forensic services, and search and rescue.
The drones have a diverse range of capabilities including thermal imaging.
