Department secretary Kim Evans told a budget estimates committee on Monday the money was spent on travel and accommodation between July 1, 2018, and March 31, compared to $838,000 spent over the same period in the previous financial year.
Mr Evans said trade missions to China and Japan, as well as other trips by Co-ordinator General John Perry, were behind the increase of almost $100,000.
Murchison independent MLC Ruth Forrest questioned how return on investment was measured against trade missions and overseas visits.
Treasurer Peter Gutwein said this was done by looking at export growth and investment attraction.
Mr Perry said the office was on target to exceed a performance target of $340 million in investment attraction.
Mr Gutwein said the department's travel and consultancy costs would be reviewed as part of the government's goal towards $450 million in savings across the public sector.
