But the reshuffle, announced on Sunday by party leader Anthony Albanese, has shunned Launceston-based senator Helen Polley.

Senator Brown will relinquish her disabilities portfolio and take up a position as shadow assistant minister for infrastructure and regional tourism, and will be the party's spokeswoman on Tasmanian issues.

The latter was a responsibility held by Senator Polley following her appointment to the role by former Labor leader Bill Shorten.

Mr Shorten will take the responsibility for overseeing the National Disability Insurance Scheme's rollout from the Opposition benches.

Ms Collins will serve as shadow minister for ageing and older Australians and shadow minister for women.

Mr Albanese said she would have an important role to play in the upcoming Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

Senator Brown said he was honoured by her new appointments and looked forward to working with Catherine King, as shadow minister for infrastructure, and Don Farrell, as shadow minister for tourism.

Ms Collins said she was thankful for her new opportunity as shadow minister for women and to continue her work dealing with aged care and peak groups in the area.

"The next period of government is a crucial time for the future of older Australians," she said.

"With the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety set to deliver an interim report in less than six months, I will be relentless in ensuring the government responds appropriately to the work of the commission."
