After being notified of the seal, Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment department officers trained in handling the situation were sent to the area.
They were able to disentangle the seal on Friday afternoon.
In other news:
A DPIPWE spokesperson said the three or four year old juvenile male fur seal was captured by the officers using a purpose-built net while they worked cautiously to free the animal.
"Officers worked carefully to restrain the animal and disentangle it," the spokesperson said.
"Once disentangled, the animal was released onsite unharmed, unperturbed and swimming freely in the adjacent area."
From photographs supplied to The Examiner, it appears the item trapped around the seal was fishing netting.
DPIPWE cautions that people should not attempt to approach or rescue an entangled animal themselves, as it can be dangerous for both the person and animal.
If you see a marine mammal entangled DPIPWE urges you report it immediately on 0427 942 537.
