Definium Networks will connect most of the state via a series of LoRaWAN (long-range) gateways, making Tasmania the ideal setting to test new ideas and devices in a real-world setting.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The network means businesses, students and community members can experiment with, and benefit from, the Internet of Things (IoT) from almost anywhere in Tasmania, Definium Technologies chief executive Mike Cruse said.
"We decided we needed to take on the challenge of rolling out a statewide LoRaWAN network," he said.
"We want to encourage people to come here to try their IoT ideas out. Tasmania is the ideal life-sized laboratory at scale, where people can try things out in our city, such as applying intelligent sensors to agricultural, horticultural and aquaculture use-cases."
Definium has started installing LoRaWAN gateways throughout the state, with the aim of having 50 installed by July 25 and 100 by Christmas.
"One hundred gateways will cover 90 per cent of the state's population," Mr Cruse said.
The Internet of Things radio network will officially launch at an industrial IoT deployment event at Peppers Silo Hotel, Invermay, on July 25, with a community launch event to follow.
Tasmanian, mainland and international users will test their ideas inside the city during the event, with Definium installing gateways on the hotel to enhance the network's capabilities.
Start-ups, students and community members will have free access to the networks part of Definium's ongoing collaboration with Enterprize and the University of Tasmania.
Enterprize facilitates free access, with Definium connecting commercial users.
