The government will rezone land it owns in Newnham to potentially provide up to 75 new social and affordable homes.
Housing Minister Roger Jaensch announced in Parliament on Tuesday 2.4 hectares of government-owned land in the suburb would be rezoned to facilitate the development.
The land is at 49 George Town Road, near the TasTAFE campus.
He said this followed the rezoning of sites in Devonport, West Moonah and Rokeby had the potential to yield 50 subdivided lots for multiple dwellings.
Mr Jaench the Devonport land was in its final stages of being rezoned.
He said land rezoning typically took more than nine months to complete, however, the Housing Land Supply Act passed last year would see process expedited without compromising planning regulations.
He said the land in Newnham would be rezoned by the end of the year.
