Tasmania Police confirmed emergency services were called to a fire on Meredith Court about 4.15pm on Friday.
On arrival, Tasmania Fire Service found a 10x10 metre garage behind the residence full engulfed.
Acting Detective Inspector Mark Burke said once the fire was brought under control a body was located inside.
"A formal identification has yet to be conducted but it is believed to be a 61-year-old man who was living in the garage," he said.
A formal identification of the deceased will be conducted and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Tasmania Police Sergeant Marcus Pearce said there is still a lot of work to do to confirm if the body belonged to the man who lived at the house. The house's owner had lived alone in the area for about 12 months and has no immediate family in the area.
The fire was deemed accidental after investigators were unable to determine its cause, due to the extent of the damage.
Tasmania Police said their thoughts are with the family.
