George Town Council's bid to establish a Placemaking Advisory Committee will be decided at its Tuesday meeting, after being scheduled for discussion in a workshop session before the meeting.

The idea for a committee that would help enhance and coordinate George Town's public spaces was presented as a notice of motion by Councillor Justine Brooks at the February meeting.
Cr Brooks said placemaking was a "multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces", that capitalised on community assets, inspiration and potential.
The intention is to create public spaces "that promote people's health, happiness, and wellbeing", she said.

In her submission, Cr Brooks said there was a direct link between communities with strong cultural identities and tourism.
"Placemaking sets about enhancing not only the built environment, but also the natural assets of a region by showcasing the uniqueness of the region," she said.
Upon accepting the relevance of such a committee, George Town Council invited expressions of interest from community members and groups with experience in arts and culture, architecture, civil engineering, strategic planning, tourism and economic development.
Committee members were required to be "...passionate individuals with a diverse range of skills, experience and backgrounds who are willing to give of their time and talent for the enhancement of their respective communities but also willing to work collaboratively for the greater good of the whole region".
Six committee members will be put forward at Tuesday's meeting: Rebecca Stuttard, Lynette White, Jo Hart, Ingrid O'Sullivan, Phill Hinds and Ann Williams-Fitzgerald, with Cr Brooks nominated as the chairwoman.
In discussing the committee formation at the March council meeting, Cr Brooks said she thought it would be "an awesome addition to the George Town area".
"It would be a really good avenue for the community to come together and put forward ideas," she said.
The committee would work similarly to the council's safety committee in that interested groups could pitch ideas to the committee, and those accepted then presented to council, she said.
Councillor Chris Barraclough said the advisory community would help coordinate placemaking within George Town.
"This is wonderful that we have an advisory committee to grow the town," Cr Barraclough said.
George Town Council will discuss appointing the committee on Tuesday, May 21, at 16-18 Anne Street, George Town, from 1pm.
