The 61-57 loss to Southern Force was the side's first in five appearances this season, a run that extends to seven since the Australian Netball League titleholders secured last year's finals series.
The South Australians led the Magpies at every change to win after surrendering a six-goal lead at quarter-time on Saturday to lose by nine.
Tasmanian coach Elissa Kent paid tribute to the Force while in the process bemoaning her side's inflexibility.
"The Force just can't be underestimated," Kent said.
"Two of the games they had lost were by one [goal] to really good opposition.
"So this shouldn't be a surprise - they're a good team.
"They have a really strong ability to disrupt us. We now have to look at what we were doing in attack and defence.
"I really think the way they played in their attack end, we just weren't used to and we were too slow to adapt.
"In our attack, we were just struggled to find any sort of rhythm to our game."
The Tasmanians won the battle under the ring, shooting 89 per cent to 84. Goalshooter Jane Cook did the best from delivery with 38 goals from 42 shots and Sam Gooden landed 19 from 21.
Hobart defenders Emma Johns and Zanna Jodlowska were the standouts and midcourter Sharni Lambden was strong in her return weekend.
"I do hope we learn more from a loss, but I also think you just want to win and still keep learning," she said.
"This group has so far been really good at growing from each game and this game we only won one quarter.
"But it's very hard to win any game when you're winning only one quarter."
