Timothy Gardiner, 29, of Ravenswood, died shortly after on the lounge room floor in his mother's arm.
Tasmania Police was called to his mother's address in Blyth Street at Ravenswood about 7.50am.
However, it is not believed Mr Gardiner, who lives elsewhere in Ravenswood, was shot at his mother's house.
Detective Inspector said Mr Gardiner had received a single gun shot, but would not say what sort of gun had been used in the incident.
"We're only eight hours into the investigation," he said at a press conference on Saturday afternoon.
Police believe the incident happened between 6am and 7.30am.
"We're confident that it's happened in the early hours in a very short time prior to him turning up at his mother's," he said.
A motive for the shooting has not been released yet, but Tasmania Police is not ruling anything out.
It is not known how he got to her house, or where he had come from, but Tasmania Police Detective Inspector Kim Steven said police had been to a number of properties.
"At this early stage of the investigation, any death involving a firearm is treated as suspicious until proven otherwise," Detective Inspector Steven said.
"We are working to determine Tim's location at the time he was shot, as we believe that he received his injuries at another location. Anyone who may have been with Tim in the past two days is asked to contact police to allow us to determine his movements over the past 48 hours."
Police have spoken to Mr Gardiner's mother, with his family giving police as much information as they can.
Detective Inspector Steven said the family had been "open" with inspectors.
"[His mum] has been in this morning and made a statement, but [is] certainly very distraught at the moment and we ask her privacy be respected," he said.
"There are a number of properties that we're checking and that we're talking to. We do know a number of associates of him that the family have put us in contact with."
Detective Inspector Steven said his thoughts were with the man's family at this difficult time.
Forensics and investigators remained at the house for most of the day on Saturday.
Anyone with any information about the Mr Gardiner's death should contact Launceston CIB on 13 14 44 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at crimestopperstas.com.au.
