Mr Stanton said Talbot's dishonesty offending was extensive, with thousands of dollars of mountain bike thefts racked up.
Talbot had a $400-a-day methylamphetamine, also known as ice, habit during the offending period and clocked up a number of drug-related charges.
The ice addict's illegal gun and knife were for "personal protection".
Most of the offending was committed while Talbot was on bail and had two suspended sentences hanging over his head.
Mr Stanton said a handwritten note given to him from Talbot showed a "genuine desire to put this behind you".
Mr Stanton said it was important to impose a sentence that would be a deterrent without crushing Talbot's prospects of rehabilitation.
The thief was convicted on all charges and sentenced to eight months' jail, with his suspended sentences to be served cumulatively.
In response to Talbot's motor vehicle stealing and driving without a licence charges, he was disqualified from driving for nine months after his release.
