The God of Thunder was accompanied by frigid southerly winds, 12-degree water temperatures, and waves in excess of four - six metres.
Surfers included Mick Fanning, Laurie Towner and Justin Allport, as well as local icon Marti Paradisis, and the Tasmanian fourth and fifth place winners, James Hollmer-Cross and Mikey Brennan.
But it was newcomer Florence who won the day, with 15.16 points.
"I'm so baffled, it's the first contest I've ever won," he said.
"To be at this venue and win is amazing.
"To be surfing with the boys and the local legends - I just can't believe it."
The competition involved the 20 participating surfers travelling three hours from Hobart by boat to Shipstern Bluff, to try their luck in the notorious waves of the remote spot.
