Both major party candidates for Bass have committed to extending a $1.47 million federal government grant for the North-East Rail Trail if elected, North East Recreation Trail secretary Michael Lowe said.
The grant set aside for the recreational walking and cycle path expires in March next year, and the group fears that the promised money will be lost if work does not begin before then.
A Legislative Council Inquiry is currently composing recommendations for the future of the disused North-East Rail Corridor, following a competing proposal for a heritage train line.
Liberal candidate Bridget Archer and sitting Labor member Ross Hart have both told Mr Lowe they will seek to extend the grant if a solution is not found before March, he said.
The $1.47 million came through the federal Stronger Regions Fund, and NERT asked the candidates to commit to an extension of the same grant or an "equivalent alternative".
