It may be controversial, but I think winter may be the best time to see Tasmania.
There's no getting around the fact that it's cold, and a swim at the beach may be off limits; however it's rarely grey - and it certainly isn't gloomy.
In fact, this is a time where the air is crisp, the sky cornflour blue and the crowds are nowhere to be seen.
Tassie lends itself to the cosy moments that come with winter; think: roaring wood fires, forest hikes, pub roasts and the occasional snow fall.
In fact, as we discovered this month, for those with a hankering for the outdoors, it also presents a unique opportunity to see some of the state's most famous sites including the multi-day Overland Track in a new way, as you tackle it in showshoes.
This is also when the state puts on some of its most exciting events, from the creative to the downright quirky.
Mona has put Tasmania firmly on the global arts map, and from June 6 to 23 it's welcoming crowds for the annual Dark Mofo festival. This internationally-coveted festival is a showcase of everything from virtual reality to a vast winter feast, and culminates with a giant bonfire for solstice night.
I don't think there's a better way to welcome winter than at the Huon Valley Mid Winter Fest.
This event is set to be a testament to the resilience of the area and the power of this very tight-knit community following a summer that saw it impacted by bushfires. In a true testament to the spirit of the region, this year's event is promising to be bigger and better than ever before.
With long table banquets, bonfires and plenty of community events on offer, this is one not to be missed.
And lovers of music and song - from the choral kind to the singing in the shower type - winter also offers a chance to participate in the Festival of Voices and to enjoy the lineup at the Devonport Jazz Festival.
Whoever said winter was for hibernation hadn't been to Tasmania. With a jam-packed calendar and the best cold-weather scenery outside the door, this is the place to be this winter.
