Bass Labor MHR Ross Hart said part of Labor's pledge for a $35 million sub-acute facility co-located near the Launceston General Hospital would include palliative care services.
The announcement comes after Friends of Northern Hospice accused Mr Hart of backflipping on policy he took to the 2016 federal election, to establish a $3 million, 10-bed hospice facility in Launceston.
Mr Hart said Labor would work with the state government and the community to design and deliver the "best possible" sub-acute care for patients in Northern Tasmania, including palliative care.
"The lack of access to inpatient beds for rehabilitation, geriatric evaluation and management, transition care, dementia and palliative care has been an issue identified in the north of Tasmania for decades," he said.
"This new facility will provide those services to an advanced level enabling not only appropriate care for those patients but the release of beds at the Launceston general for acutely ill patients.
"This is a huge commitment for the LGH and for palliative care in the North, something I have been lobbying for since before the last election."
Launceston's only dedicated hospice Philip Oakden House was closed by aged care provider One Care in 2007, leaving no public palliative care beds in the North.
Friends of Northern Hospice have been campaigning for a new dedicated, standalone hospice ever since.
Spokeswoman Barb Baker said the group welcomed any support for palliative and end-of-life care.
"The benefits of hospice care are recognised around the world including the services offered by the government-funded 10 bed Whittle Ward in Hobart," she said.
"We trust that Labor would draw on people with hospice experience to design this tranquil, homelike facility within an integrated setting. It could certainly work with careful planning."
Liberal candidate for Bass Bridget Archer was contacted for comment.
