Launceston Competitions secretary Margaret East said about 30 character duos were performed on Tuesday night.
For the first time, there was a nursery rhyme in costume section for grade two and under.
"We only had three entries this year, but it was just beautiful and I hope that it takes off and gets more entries," Ms East said.
The speech and drama section is being adjudicated by Jess Chambers from NSW.
"She is absolutely delightful with the children and she is giving them wonderful encouragement, criticism and help," Ms East said.
"She comes down to give the results, she helps them and tells them how to present their work and then she shakes hands with them."
Emily Petersen adjudicated the creative writing section.
The competitions, which are in their 117th year, continue until Saturday, July 13.
