Australia is slated to play New Zealand in game three of its one-day international series at Bellerive Oval.

Cricket Australia officially announced next season's international program on Tuesday that also included three Tests against the Kiwis and two against Pakistan.

Cricket Tasmania chief executive Nick Cummins has welcomed the latest change to the state's unconventional international calendar.

But Hobart's match and one-day international cricket as a whole was almost put on the backburner, threatened to be abandoned in Australia for the first time since 1976 prior to the introduction of Kerry Packer's World Series.

That came after a Board of Control for Cricket in India demand for Australia's one-day side to tour the country in January, forcing the New Zealand series to be pushed back to March.

"I'm happy because had we had the one-day match in January that would have presented some different challenges along the lines that we have seven BBL games across Hobart and Launceston and is that market saturation?" Cummins said.

"Playing in March gives us some clean air to be able to proactively promote the game and get as big a crowd as possible for what I'd argue is one of the better weather months in Tasmania."

Tasmanians have not seen Australia play in the summer peak months of December or January since an ill-fated Test against West Indies that ended in two and a half days.

Hobart last hosted a one-day international on November 11 last year, attracting just 5321 fans against South Africa to the Sunday game.

The game will be held on March 20 after the opening two at the SCG. Cricket Tasmania has promoted the Friday night fixture on Twitter as "the Home of the Decider!"

"I'm confident March will be as good if not better than November," Cummins said.

"Now notwithstanding the fact we've got a standalone WBBL this season, plus the Big Bash, it's going to be a great summer of high quality content for fans regardless."

Cummins was convinced the 50-over encounter with the New Zealanders was the best possible outcome.

Cricket Tasmania is hoping to bring new Test nation Afghanistan to Hobart in the 2020-21 season should a deal be sealed between the two national cricket boards.

But Cummins expects the next Tasmanian Test match won't be held until as late as 2023-24 season.

"With the Future Tours program, we have a pretty good idea about the amount of international content in the country," he said.

"Any year there is only five Tests, we are a very low chance of getting Test cricket.

"So that was no surprise.

"Then it's a case of what one-dayer we're going to get and then it's about timing.

"The discussion around the India series also provides a level of complexity for Cricket Australia as well.

"But we're very happy with getting the game in March.

"I should also say with the Women's World Cup being in February as well has probably staggered the international season."
