The Liberal Party this morning released a statement it said she had asked them to distribute.

Ms Whelan said it had been "an extremely difficult period for my family".

"I have been receiving threats to the level I could never have imagined," she said.

"Phone calls, voicemails, messages and emails have made those close to me startled and afraid.

"These have included messages to kill my children and myself."

Ms Whelan admitted to making "ill-advised and misinformed" comments but denied making "vile" posts which have been reported and were raised in state parliament on Thursday.

"It is my intention to continue legal action regarding these posts falsely attributed to me," she said.

"It saddens me that people who put their hand up to represent the people of Australia are subjected to such vicious personal attacks from their opposition, born directly from their fear of losing.

"I want to thank the many people who have supported me and those who continue to support me and my family and I look forward to continue contributing to the community."

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Scott Morrison insists a Liberal candidate dumped over a series of anti-Muslim social media posts doesn't reflect his team's views.

"Her views were her views and they do not represent the views of the party I lead," Mr Morrison told reporters in Melbourne on Friday.

Tasmanian Liberal senator Jonathon Duniam has urged Lyons voters to support the National's candidate now Ms Whelan has resigned.

He would not be drawn on reports she would stand as an independent.

"What Jess does is a matter for her," he said.

"She remains on the ballot paper no matter what happens."

He defended the party for not taking action earlier but agreed that vetting of candidates needed to be improved.

"As soon as we became aware of issues, action was taken," Senator Duniam repeatedly told reporters in Hobart on Friday.

"Now we are moving forward."

The Liberal Party said voters in Lyons should support the National's Deanna Hutchinson but vote Liberal in the Senate.
