As the weather turns chilly, they bring out their fleet of 1953 Drewry diesel locomotives to pull the carriages.

These engines have a long history of servicing this historic railway line, and winding through the rainforest in the damp of a cool Tassie winter, you get a sense of the monumental task presented with building and working on these tracks.

But it's the landscape that captivates, and perhaps in winter more so than any other time.

It's now, with the fog hanging low and the evening mist closing in that this environment comes to life. Shadows twist into a contortionist's range of shapes, waterfalls barrel down the hillside and the hum of the motor seems to keep pace with it all, singing the song of an industrial past that has been slowly reclaimed by the landscape.

Heading deep into the rainforest at Dubbil Barril with a steaming mug of mulled wine as company seems the ideal fit to these moody surroundings.

A place that's ideally savoured during winter's chill.
