Labor leader Rebecca White grilled Health Minister Michael Ferguson in Question Time in State Parliament on Wednesday about the contents of paramedic's letter to the head of Ambulance Tasmania.

In the letter, the paramedic made suggestions about overcoming ramping and said "without swift and decisive intervention, the consequences could be catastrophic".

Ms White also revealed that Worksafe Tasmania had begun an investigation into "the unsafe work practises relating to ambulance ramping at the Royal Hobart Hospital".

"Do you acknowledge that ambulance ramping increases the risk of patients dying?" Ms White asked.

"What do you say to those ambulance paramedics who are at their wits end, with a distressing 6 per cent identifying they have contemplated self-harm as a consequence of the pressure they are facing?"

Greens Franklin member Rosalie Woodruff also asked about a patient who was transferred from the North "with a known abdominal aortic aneurysm and was ramped at the Royal for hours until their vessel burst, requiring life-saving surgery".

Dr Woodruff said a a six-week-old baby in Sorell was "triaged with respiratory arrest who had to wait for an ambulance from Glenorchy".

"The lives of patients are being put at risk on your watch every day," she said.

Mr Ferguson said he was aware of the letter and the Worksafe Tasmania investigation.

"We have employed 51 more paramedics to provide more of a workforce to support each other," he said.

"We are the first government in many years to put new crews into the North West, the North and the South.

"We have now budgeted for and are in the process of employing and deploying a further 42 paramedics to our regional communities, specifically as support paramedics in response to concerns around fatigue, roster management and better response times."

Mr Ferguson said Ambulance Tasmania would respond to the paramedic's letter and accused Ms White of revelling in the challenge the government faced.

"What we will not be doing is playing Rebecca White's blame game. It has helped no-one.There is too much of this continued reliance on the politicking, when you know that we have reversed the cuts that you made," he said.

"I ask, why are you stuck in the past?"

HACSU secretary Tim Jacobson admitted he cried when he read the paramedic's letter.

"The community knows how hard ambulance workers have campaigned to reduce the incidence of ramping over many years," he said.

"It is the worse its ever been. The letter confirmed to us our long held concerns about the welfare of workers and patients in the current circumstances. The Government has now been handed evidence, evidence that ramping is hurting Tasmanians.

"No one wants to see anyone die as a result of ramping, for me the biggest tragedy would be the death of a worker."

Mr Jacobson said patient ramping was widespread at all Tasmanian hospitals and had increased from 3.4 hours per day in 2015-16 to 213 hours per day last financial year.ly.

In the letter the paramedic says he surveyed his colleagues in Southern Tasmania about the "dire state of morale".

"It is well established that paramedics experience some of the highest rates of work-related psychological injury and that the rate of suicide in our industry is nearly 10 times the national average," he said.

"I hold a genuine and immediate concern for the welfare of my colleagues and fear that without swift and decisive intervention, the consequences could be catastrophic."

The discovery of asbestos at the Royal Hobart Hospital was also raised in Parliament after workers walked off the job on Wednesday.
