The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will be sentenced in relation to possessing 966 images and nine videos depicting child sexual exploitation of children as young as three years old.
Justice Stephen Estcourt said he intended on sentencing the man to a suspended jail term with community service, however, a pre-sentencing report indicated the man was unsuitable for a community corrections order.
Justice Estcourt said he would not consider handing the man a suspended sentence alone, due to the "serious nature" of his offending, leaving him with the only two options of immediate imprisonment or home detention.
The man said he did not object to being considered for home detention.
The court heard it would take about eight weeks for a home detention suitability assessment to be done on the man's accommodation.
Justice Estcourt said since the launch of the state's home detention initiative this year there have been nine orders made with 55 currently being assessed.
Justice Estcourt adjourned the matter until June 13, with the man to appear at the Supreme Court in Burnie to be sentenced.
