The inaugural Tasmania Devils coach is adamant to make a point moments after the side's 47-point loss at the hands of the Western Jets.

"We need eight midfielders," he says, "I reckon today we had four and I got to find another four if we're going to be competitive in this."

Fletcher then errs when he adds Bailey Gordon's name to the mix of potential mids.

Gordon played down back as a crumbing defender until Fletcher in the last term finds out the TSL Tiger "gives us something" in the thick of it.

Returning Launceston forward Jackson Callow could be a surprise choice there next game following Australian under-17 honours.

"They are the types that I'm going to have to find soon," Fletcher says. "We don't get enough possessions through the middle to be honest."

The alarm bells on Sunday went off in Fletcher's head.

He thinks about coming NAB fixtures after playing two of the 12 Victorian clubs.

"We got to find some more mids - we have to change our team around to find more possessions," Fletcher says.

"Most NAB League teams have good midfields.

"So we have to get better and compete in that area."

Kicking just three goals for the match - the first inside 45 seconds from Launceston's Issac Chugg and the last in the dying minutes - has the coach coining the phrase "goalkeeping" to describe the poor method of attack.

"All the way in our defensive half, but that's our level and it's going to get harder, so we have to learn," he says.

That comes after the early adrenaline subsides in front of arriving AFL fans.

"I thought we started well, but they just went back in their shells after 10 minutes," Fletcher says, "and then the scoreboard started ticking over and that's where you have to stand up, don't you?"
