Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash on Winkleigh Road late in the afternoon, about two kilometres from the Rookery Road junction.
Initial investigations indicate the woman was driving a white Mitsubishi Lancer North, when the car crossed the centre line on a left hand bend.
The car then entered a gravel verge on the incorrect side of the road and appears to have lost control before crossing the road way and hitting a tree, police say.
The woman, who was the sole occupant of car, sustained serious injuries.
She was transferred to Launceston General Hospital where she remained on Friday.
Police are investigating all possible causes for the crash.
Any witnesses who may have seen the car prior to or at the time of the crash are asked to contact Northern Crash Investigations on 6777 3936 or 131 444.
