The one bedroom house on Bass Highway, about ten kilometres west of Smithton, caught fire shortly after midnight on Saturday.

However, emergency services were not alerted until about 10am Saturday.

Burnie Police Sergeant Adrian Mollon has asked anyone with information to come forward.

"The occupant of the residence was not injured during the fire," he said.

"As part of the investigation, he will be spoken with over the coming days.

"His account will form a component of our investigation into this matter."

Sgt Mollon said the house was a timber and galvanised iron construction, and it is quite a remote property.

No other properties or land were damaged or burnt in the fire.

Sgt Mollon said it was estimated the fire caused about $100,000 worth of damage.
