The crash occurred about 5am on Friday morning near Mole Creek.
Tasmania Police said initial investigations indicate the man's green Toyota Camry was being driven on Mole Creek Road when he lost control and swerved to the incorrect side of the road.
The driver then over corrected and slid off the road and hit a power pole, police say.
Emergency services extracted the man from the vehicle.
It is believed the man works in the area, but it is unknown if he was on his way to work.
Tasmania Police reminded drivers that winter conditions can create changed road conditions, and when combined with increased traffic flow during Easter, require a higher level of concentration.
Drivers are urged to be conscious of their speed, wear their seat belt, and not to use their mobile phones when driving.
