Record Store Day began back in 2008 as a way to celebrate the culture of independent record stores, and takes place in stores throughout the world.

On Record Store Day last year, about 40 people had lined up outside Avenue Records before the store had opened, looking to score some exclusive vinyls.

Store owner Callum Nobes said if they could match last year's success on Saturday, it would be great.

"We're answering more questions and have had a lot more interest online this year, so hopefully we'll have more [interest] than last year. But, we'll see."

Mr Nobes said it was a massive day for the store and helped to give vinyl more exposure.

"This day is exclusive for independent stores," he said. "It just gives us a chance to make a bit of a name for ourselves against the chain stores."

A number of records are pressed specifically for the day and are only distributed to stores participating in the event.

"These special releases come only to us, so it's a good chance for us to show off what we can do and what we have," Mr Nobes said.

He said white there were heaps of great special releases this year, those from Van Morrison and Bob Dylan were particularly exciting.

"And, Dr John is one of my favorites, so that one might come home with me," he said. "We should have more than we've ever had in terms of the special releases."
