Finalists in two Australian Small Business Champion Award categories, Kingthing won the 2019 Marketing Services category in Sydney at the weekend.
The accolade was even sweeter when they discovered they were up against marketing businesses with up to 100 staff and much bigger operations.
Preparing entries for clients and, later, her own business showed where the business could do better, founder Rebecca King said.
"We've had experience in other awards programs over the years and we realised the areas we can improve on over time," she said.
"Instead of just marketing, we ticked all the boxes in making sure we're identifying best business practice."

Besides marketing expertise, the judges liked Kingthing's approach to staff satisfaction and using technology in the business.
"They were also impressed with our resilience and our ability to overcome problems," Ms King said.
Kingthing was initially established by Ms King in 2010.
"It was just me around the kitchen table, but now we're eight [staff]."
These staff work across search engine optimisation, graphic design, website design, social media marketing, writing, speaking and strategy.
The Australian Small Business Champion Awards were created in 1999.
