In June 2017, then-Defence Minister Marise Payne visited Tasmania to announce the Paterson Barracks would be closed and $5 million would be spent to upgrade the Youngtown Barracks.
Upgrades to the Youngtown Barracks was part of the Launceston City Deal, with the vision to create a central and modern cadet facility for the city.
A Defence spokesman said on Thursday, the Defence Department was preparing a business case for the federal government but no timeline on the closure of the barracks has been set.

"A proposal for the future of Paterson Barracks and an appropriate timeframe, is being developed for government consideration," the spokesperson said.
"Defence is preparing a detailed business case for government consideration which will inform the timeframe for delivery of the new facilities in Youngtown and North Launceston."
Paterson Barracks will be divested from the Defence portfolio and repurposed into a community area.
A proposal was put forward by key community and government stakeholders, who proposed the centre could be developed into a Launceston History and Research Centre.
Research Centre spokesman John Dent said at the time a partnership had been built between like-minded organisations to put forward the proposal. The Launceston City Deal was signed in 2017.
