The show, from the same creator as The Kettering Incident, is scheduled to appear on streaming device Stan once finished.
The film features a well-known Australian cast including Emma Booth, Ewen Leslie and Aaron Pedersen and is based in Hobart with kunanyi/Mt Wellington and the River Derwent to form the backdrop.
Arts Minister Elise Archer said the government contributed $1 million towards the project.
"It's one of the largest production costs that we've every contributed to," she said.
"It's the first ever time we will have a large screen production of this nature filmed entirely in Tasmania."
The government funding comes through Screen Tasmania's screen innovation fund to assist the burgeoning film industry in Tasmania.
The money will cover to the series' $18.2 million budget.
"The show, which began filming last week, will be shot entirely in Tasmania and is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to the state, with over $7.5 million to be spent on Tasmanian goods and services, including accommodation, catering and transport," she said.
"Not to mention of course the exposure our beautiful landscapes, our stories, our people, and our place will have across the world."
The state has featured in a number of successful screen productions over the past several years including three seasons of ABC show Rosehaven, Aussie Lobster Men, and The Hunter starring Willem DaFoe
