The Hurricanes pace bowling trio of Tyler Johns, Kurt Lamprey and Shaun Redman delivered with the ball, while Nick Granger called on his experience with the bat to keep the Black Caps at bay.
Play resumed in sunny but cool conditions, with the Hurricanes 4-60.
Brodie Hayes (29) and Josh Barry (13) returned to the crease eager to pile on the runs, but both fell in quick succession to Black Caps' paceman Jacob Wiggers.
Nick Imms (12) edged the Hurricanes closer to 100, but it was a 29-run eighth wicket partnership between Zach Walker and Shaun Redman that provided them with first innings score comparable to recent grand finals.
Walker again proved his mettle as a lower middle order batsman, making a patient 39 from 119 balls (three fours, one six). Redman was content to occupy the crease, striking eight not out from 77 balls.
The Hurricanes were eventually all out for 141, with Jacob Wiggers picking up the final wicket to finish with a well-deserved 5-28 from 23.2 overs.
The complexion of the game changed completely from the start of Ulverstone's first innings.
Skipper Josh Walmsley returned to opening duties, but was out for a duck, trapped lbw by Shaun Redman from the fourth ball of the innings.
When fellow opener Julius Kerwin (0) was also trapped in front from Tyler Johns' first ball, the Black Caps were 2-2.
In an outstanding display of fast bowling, Tyler Johns (4-16), Shaun Redman (3-18) and this year's Don Pearce Bowling Award winner Kurt Lamprey (3-7) took all ten Black Caps wickets in just 24.1 overs, skittling the visitors for 42.
This continued an incredible run of low totals in 1st grade grand finals, which has seen teams in eight of the last ten deciders post first innings totals of less than 100.
Only Coach Jacob Snare (12) and Jacob Wiggers (10) made double figures in a forgettable Ulverstone first innings.
Three players were out for ducks as the Hurricanes secured a 99-run first innings lead.
The Black Caps needed to claim early wickets to stall the Burnie Yeoman's momentum.
However, Hurricanes openers Nick Granger (46 not out) and Brodie Hayes (21 not out) weren't about to let that happen, grinding out an unbeaten 69-run partnership from 38 overs to close out Day 2.
The Hurricanes will take a 168-run lead into Day 3, eager to bat for as long as possible to clinch their second premiership in the last three seasons.
But Ulverstone is a proud club and will throw everything at the Hurricanes early on Day 3, and if they sense an opening, can chase down a target to claim their first premiership since 2015/16.
Play will resume at 10am on Sunday and continue until 6pm if required.
