The undefeated southern hosts appeared to have grabbed all three points in the Italian derby at KGV when Nicky Edwards volleyed in a beauty with three minutes remaining.
But City reaped the reward of never giving up deep into Fergietime.
Jarrod Linger won a pivotal tackle on the edge of the box and Mies carried the ball in on goal before firing in his fourth goal of the campaign.
Mies had earlier played provider to give City a 20th minute lead, neatly setting up Greg Roller who chipped in a beauty.
Mies went close to doubling the lead before Matthew Pace equalised on 36 minutes when his header off the underside of the crossbar was adjudged to have crossed the line.
Keeper Lachlan Clark kept City in it while Roller missed a chance at the other end and Linger's goalbound effort was blocked by Thomas Little before the late drama.
"We worked really hard, kept fighting and got a deserved point," said City coach Lino Sciulli.
"I feel things are falling into place and it's just fine tuning ahead but there's a lot of heart and application being shown."
Having seen a steady progression across their four statewide matches to date, Riverside Olympic took a step backwards as 10-man Olympia took full advantage of last week's bye with a 5-0 win at Warrior Park.
Olympic were two down after just seven minutes as Jack Ryan fired in the opener before Joffrey Nikoso doubled the lead after his initial shot came back off the crossbar.
The visitors were handed a lifeline when Olympia keeper Kyle McDonald was dismissed midway through the first half for a foul on Rhys Kinslow and then denied a strong case for a penalty for a foul on Jasper King.
But silky finishes gave Nikoso and Ryan their second goals either side of the interval and Nikoso won the hat-trick race when he added his side's fifth three minutes from time.
"We got beaten by a better team," Olympic coach Alex Gaetani said. "But there were some positives there. We learned that we definitely need to keep possession a bit better. We gave it away too much and they hit us on the counter."
Rock bottom Clarence continued their average of conceding nine goals per game with a 9-0 loss to champions Devonport.
Strikers played against 10 men for 69 minutes and shared the goals around at Valley Road, Edward Bidwell finishing as the only multiple scorer.
Glenorchy Knights and South Hobart kicked off round 7 at KGV on Friday night when three second-half goals earned the visitors a 3-0 win and temporary residence at the top of the table.
Both Launceston teams are at home next Saturday with Olympic hosting Hobart Zebras at 1.30pm three hours before Olympia face a resurgent Launceston City at Prospect.
