Off the Table is opening a behind the scene tour of Pure Food Eggs farm at Longford.
Farm manager John Sattler uses the knowledge he has collected over the past 30 years on the farm to explain the high-tech operations, the life-cycle of the hens and day-to-day farm life as he guides the tour.
"Hopefully the tours will give the public an insight to how we produce eggs on a modern poultry farm to dispel the old myths of chooks who can't walk and are without feathers..." Mr Sattler said.
"It will allow us to present the facts of modern-day poultry farming and show that the welfare outcomes are far different to where they were years ago.
"I think it's an educational thing to be able to come out here and see first hand how well looked after the hens are, how happy the hens are and how clean the place is."
The farm has about 160,000 laying hens and produces around 76,000 dozen eggs a week.
Off the Table launched recently to highlight Tasmanian produce in behind the scene tour experiences. Founder Anna Yip said the egg tours would start on April 24.
"It's very clear that people are very interested and also concerned about where their food comes from and how it's produced," she said.
"I think Off the Table is a reflection of a consumer movement and more than a tourism product offering."
