Mr Johnston has held the position for the past six years and announced he would be leaving the board completely.
"I have served my time on the board. I have been on the board for 10 years, and I think it's time for someone else to step up," he said.
"It has been an honour and a privilege to serve the Tasmanian agricultural community.
"I have given a fair bit to Tasmanian agriculture... It has been good, and I really enjoyed my time, and I'm leaving it in a great position financially. I'm proud of what I have achieved at the TFGA."
He said leaving the TFGA will send him in a different direction, which will allow him to focus more on his role as mayor of the Meander Valley Council.
The elections were held on Wednesday morning.
Past vice-chair Marcus McShane, who runs a mixed farming operation in the Midlands, was elected the new president. Ian Sauer was voted in as the new vice chair.
