Mayoral Car Subsidy
IN response to Melanie Roberts (The Examiner, March 19) concerning the mayoral car subsidy at the Meander Valley Council I wish to make the following points.

First, it is totally incorrect to say the debate proceeded without a single word as I spoke for the motion mentioning that the mayor lives at Meander; the long distances involved in representing this municipality and to uphold the status of the newly elected leader.
Secondly, the writer's address could be seen to be misleading as Prospect is in the Launceston council area, whereas Prospect Vale is in Meander Valley.
Finally, in relation to the notice of motion at the February meeting which included live streaming, it would have been most disappointing for the mover when the motion failed to get a seconder from the seven councillors present.
Obviously those councillors present did not have the appetite for support.
Now I believe that this issue needed to be first workshopped with the new council and furthermore, in my experience with notices of motion it is always best to garner support before bringing the motion to the table.

Trivago bookings
EVERYDAY we have this lady come out and promote Trivago on television as a site to use to make one's accommodation bookings. Every time I viewed her I thought she owned it and must be very wealthy with so many advertisements.
Today I learnt how this and other sites are owned by billionaires and stop accommodation providers from offering cheaper accommodation as they are forced to charge accommodation prices at top prices. I also learnt that our governments are paid off with donations by these billionaires to not do anything against this corruption.
I am tired of our two major corrupt parties and we do definitely need a change of the two major parties who also bow to other groups who have strong powers.
Not a way to run a government, putting biggest voices over us the public. The best way to check accommodation prices is to make direct bookings to accommodation places.
One other issue is the search engines on the internet that give sites like Trivago top search placements. It is wrong.

Gender Debate
IT saddens me to see people trying to reduce the birth gender issue to their unsupportable religious view.
Campbell Markham (The Examiner, March 15) totally ignores the issues of the many that do not meet this simplistic biblical binary view.
The simple fact is that children are born with misshapen or missing limbs, twins can even share vital organs, and yes some children are born with indeterminate sexual organs. This variation can also occur in the vital cognitive components of the brain.
However, the self-righteous demand that these children are defined as something that they are not.
We have finally accepted the obvious with the recent LGBTQI legal changes, now the peripheral issues need to be addressed.
The issue is a matter of human decency acknowledging reality not a subject for Trumpian ignorance.

Hobart Projects
BRIAN Khan's letter (The Examiner, March 12) about Andrew Wilkie's successful fundraising for Hobart projects was great for the South of the state, yet the people of Launceston have been waiting for over 20 years or more for our should be jewel in the crown, the Tamar estuary, to be fixed from pollution plus.
Since my last letter of February 9 about my dog Coby refusing to drink the foul water, the response was wonderful, yet there was obvious silence from our government and council on this important issue worries me.
Maybe another 20 years.
Barry Milner, Ravenswood.
Pill Testing
ARE the powers that be seriously contemplating testing illicit drugs to ascertain if they are to take them, that they won't kill them.
And at what cost to us taxpayers?
Wouldn't this be similar to having my car tested every time prior to driving it, to see if I can safely travel at 260km/h as is on the clock, instead of the legal 110km/h limit?
Maureen Shadbolt, Longford.
Not Muslims
I HAVE never heard a Muslim person request that we remove nativities from our shopping malls nor that we remove the Lord's Prayer from our Parliament.
It is the so-called do-gooders that do this, saying they don't want to offend the Muslim population.
The Muslim population couldn't give a fig, they are quite happy just living their lives the way they wish and they leave the rest of us alone. It is these so-called do-gooders that cause friction between us all and just look at what happens.
Brenda Luies, Longford.
On the Side of the Road
UNTIL recently, I thought parking was the capital of China.
As it turns out, it seems that many of the drivers of Launceston agree.
I see cars parked on footpaths, sidewalks, and everything in between.
There used to be a certain pride in parking, obviously not these days.

Rule the Roost
I, LIKE many of my compatriots, am confused and perturbed about the new AFL rules.
If you're going to give two 50-metre penalties, why not just give a 100-metre penalty, like it used to be?
Instead of this folk law, how about the people's lore?
