The collision, involving a red Subaru and a grey Holden, occurred around 11am, with the Subaru blocking southbound lanes after the Tamar Street bridge.
Tasmania Police were directing traffic through the intersection, with congestion causing delays on Boland and Tamar streets.
Police requested that people avoid the area due to congestion.
Fire and police remained on the scene, though no injuries had been reported.
