After having a four-year streak ended by Scotch Oakburn last year, Hutchins returned to the top at Lake Barrington by finishing seven seconds clear of its Northern counterpart in 6:04.
Launceston Church Grammar made it two Northern schools in the top three by finishing in 6:20 with Friends a further 12 seconds back.
Scotch Oakburn also recorded a top-three placing in the senior girls' eights, crossing the line just four seconds after St Michael's Collegiate, who won in 6:57.
Fahan scraped in for second spot with seven minutes flat.
Hutchins and St Michael's also took out the under-16 boys' and girls' eights respectively to claim eights doubles.
St Patrick's College enjoyed several successes throughout the day, with Ryan Anderson's under-15 boys' singles win complemented by a victory in the under-16 boys' fours.
Grammar also won the open boys' quad scull on what Rowing Tasmania executive officer Rob Prescott described as a great day for rowing.
"We would have had a crowd of close on 5000 people, it was a massive day," Prescott said.
"It was a little bit wet but you couldn't have rowed in better conditions on the water.
"The rowing was to a very high standard and it was a fabulous day."
More than 650 rowers from 12 independent Tasmanian schools competed in the event.
