Tasmania Police attended the school on Friday about 2.30pm to respond to the report of an alleged email threat.
"Police attended the school and determined there was no immediate threat to staff or students," a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.
A letter was sent home to parents by the school's principal Karen Hay said all students were taken to the gym while the threat was investigated.
An Education Department spokesman said the school was placed in lockdown as a preventative measure.
"This afternoon a lockdown was initiated at a Launceston school, purely as a preventative measure, after a reported potential threat to safety from outside the school," the spokesperson said.
"The situation was resolved externally, and at no stage were students or staff in danger."
IN OTHER NEWS:
The spokesman said the DoE has clear procedures in place for the management of critical incident and emergency situations.
"The lockdown procedure applies when students, clients and staff need to be locked within buildings for their own safety.
"Lockdowns and off-site evacuation should only be used when there is a major incident or threat."
East Tamar Primary School has 337 full-time equivalent students across Kinder to Grade 6.
