Early site works for the new Southern Remand Centre commenced at the Risdon Prison complex in March and, once complete, the centre will house more than 140 remandees.
Tasmania has been experiencing an increase in prisoner numbers, with remandees the fastest growing group.
The project will create 130 jobs in the construction phase and 50 ongoing positions.
Applications for a managing contractor for the new centre will open on Saturday
The Southern Remand Centre is part of a $340 million government commitment to improve the state's ageing prison infrastructure.
